When You’re Kicked in the Gut
Wednesday, September 02, 2009
Yesterday I received a “tweet” from Rick Warren that got me thinking. He wrote: “Following Him when your heart is breaking is greater faith than praising Him when your heart is singing. (Psalm 34:18)” In other words, not giving up when you feel “out of faith” sometimes demonstrates more faith than singing when things are going great.
That’s an important thought. That means that sometimes when we feel guilty for not “feeling” full of faith, we are actually demonstrating great faith. As you can imagine, I looked up the text that Warren referenced and this is what it says:
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”
~ Psalm 34:18 NLT
The Message translates this verse too freely, but it made me smile:
“If your heart is broken, you’ll find GOD right there;
if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath.”
~ Psalm 34:18 The Message
So, if you feel like you’ve been kicked in the gut today, just know that God will help you catch your breath! He is close to the brokenhearted and that is good news.
